Be a good corporate girly💼👩‍💼

Wake up early, get your steps in; it’s time for your 9-5.

“Smile on camera,” they say. Brush your hair, look good today.

Cover those shoulders, make sure to pronounce it right. Stay in your lane, don't start a fight.

“No politics in the workplace,” they plead. “Be a good corporate girly.”

Be the first one in and the last one to leave unless you want to get on your knees.

Make sure to be attentive to all of your boss's needs. Don’t overreact, they firmly plead. He’s just being friendly; don’t take it personally.

Be a good corporate girly, like me. Make that small talk and know your sports. Keep up the chatter. That's the only way you can move up that ladder.

“People over profits,” they chime, disguised by their performative lies.

“Smile on camera,” they say. Brush your hair, look good today.

Cover those shoulders, make sure to pronounce it right. Stay in your lane, don't start a fight.

But they don’t look like me, I say. They don’t talk like me, understand me, or try to get to know me.

Is it so hard to be seen?

They tell me to act this way, talk this way, behave this way if I want to be seen.

Asking me to assimilate is what they’re really asking of me.
